Step 1: Do your research and stop to think!

The American Kennel Club says this about our breed:

“The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America’s most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog.”

BUT THEY ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE! DO YOUR HOMEWORK PLEASE!

Consider the following:

1) We want our dogs to be members of the family and be able to spend time with their people, not left outside. Do you have enough time for a dog? Do you realize this commitment could be for years and years?

2)We will require enrollment in training for first-time dog owners and certain dogs requiring behavioral modification. How will this fit into your schedule?

3) What is the plan for pottying and exercising the dog in the event that the yard is not securely fenced?

Step 2: Understand our Process and Requirements

Our dogs and puppies typically adopt almost immediately after they are cleared medically. Therefore you will not find long lists of available dogs here.

Stop and consider these requirements please:

1)All other pets in the home must be spayed or neutered. *The only exceptions would be due to a medical reason or if the pet is involved in "showing" (proof required).

2) Dogs in the home must be up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccines, yearly heartworm tests, and year-round monthly heartworm preventative.

3) Indoor cats must be up-to-date on rabies vaccines.

4) If you rent, please acquire a written confirmation from your landlord for verification of animal acceptance.

Step 3: Formal Application

Foster Coordinators will link potential adopters through Petfinders, social media, or internal contact to began the adoption process for each dog in our care. It is at this stage that the private formal adoption application link will be forwarded for completion to candidates that initially appear to be a possible match. The adoption application costs $25 and is non-refundable.

Our process includes:

1)Contacting your vet for information on current and previous animals. We take into account the applicant's veterinary history for current & previous animals as a predictor of care that will be provided in the future.

2) Contacting your references. Ideal references include neighbors, others you have pet sat for, and people who can speak to your ability to be a responsible pet owner.

3) We will complete a home visit to verify the safety and appropriateness of the home for the pet. This can also be a good time to ask more questions.

4) Once the application is fully approved, IT IS TIME TO MEET THE DOG!!

If you have completed steps 1 & 2, read step 3, and would like to be considered in the future, please contact adopt@3clr.org.
